SwedishAmerican now Packages Medications the Green Way

We’ve all received a package in the mail and struggled with the decision of what to do to with the packaging materials. SwedishAmerican’s Pharmacy now has a solution when it comes to sending temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals to patients. It is using Green Cell Foam, a new packaging material that is 100% bio-based and makes disposal easy and green.

When patients receive their medication, they can now do one of three things with the packaging:

  1. Dissolve – The foam dissolves in water in sixty seconds and is safe on drains and septic systems.

  2. Compost – Composting is another option and will compost in 60 days or less when in a moist soil environment.

  3. Burn – The foam burns cleanly and safely in fireplaces and fire pits.

“SwedishAmerican cares about the environment and is always striving to improve its quality standards for our patients,” says SwedishAmerican Pharmacist Angela Zivkovic. “Using Green Cell Foam is one more way the hospital can “go green” and keep our planet clean and beautiful for generations to come.”

Earlier this year, SwedishAmerican went “green” and installed CsRx Stericylce, a pharmaceutical waste management system to reduce groundwater contamination and drug diversion. For more information on SwedishAmerican’s Pharmacy Department, call (779) 696-4578.
